THE INDONESIAN CULTURE'S ROLE IN DIGITAL ERA

Honorable judges and audiences.

As my mom said, long time ago it was so difficult when she wanted to know about news from other country. She had to wait and hoped that television or radio would report it. And sometime she couldn’t listen that news. But now, we just need a few second to know every news from abroad. Just go on your search engine in internet, type what you want to know, and 1 2 3, it appears. With the picture, the name of the people, the condition. You also can imagine like you are in that place by watching the video in youtube. That’s what we got by becoming a part of digital era.

Digital era is one result of globalization. Through all digital tools, we can share everything fast without any limitation. We can search everything we want. Start from drama, movie, news, scholarship, tourism resort from other country, address, song, game, or even something which is actually forbidden to be watched. For example porn video or other sites which content of banned activity, like consuming drug, and drinking alcohol.

Based on Mr. Budi Waseso, the leader of BNN, the number of drug user are increase until 5.9 million person in November 2015. And it has possibility to be increased again through the easiness process in distributing between the seller and the user. They use phone, internet and other modern tools to communicate each other.

Today, student who has hold smart phone, when they have a time to break, they prefer being busy with their phone to playing with their friend. It is so bad for teenagers who need a lot  of chance to socialize with the society as their preparation. Beside, through this story we can conclude that parent have taught something which is really bad if we compare it with Indonesian culture.

Based on Kompasiana.com, the number of abortion which is done by teenagers are always increase for about 2.500 cases per year. They have mind and they know that abortion is banned without any license from doctor. Why they did so ? Because they are still student. But they have pregnant before getting marriage after doing that ‘activity’ with their boy friend. I believe they have known that free sex are forbidden. They knew it from their parent, family, neighbor, teacher as the value of Indonesia. But they did it because they watch it. They learn it and try it.

My friends, like it or not we have to realize that internet is the tool which is full of west value. We still can find other good information, but inside also provide bad information. It is like ‘simalakama’. We have to be clever in choosing and filtering which one is good and which one is bad.

As Indonesian, we have known that our culture are really different with west culture. But knowing that our citizen specially our generation would like to be destroyed through digital tools, we have to save them by upholding all of Indonesian culture.

Government as the leader of this country should re-arrange or tighten the system of education. Not only for student but also society. For student it can be given by improving the quality of teaching and supervising them. Beside, they have to give all of Indonesian culture through the process of studying. For society, they can use what are loved by society. For example, through soup opera. Don’t let all TV station shows soup opera or program which don’t have any good value. Optimize the number of young generation to create a good story of program by becoming a scenario.

Then, parent. As the guard of the children, they have teach their children about all value of Indonesian. Start form tolerance, appreciate each other, humble, mutual assistance, greeting each other however we are and when ever. Always control your children and give them advising about which can be imitated or which should be avoided. Society also must give good education for each other. Because good society also will create good people.

The last is us, young generation. Like it or not, we have to look back unto our culture as Indonesia. We may open our mind to learn everything, but don’t let ourselves to flooded inside digital era.

Brother and sister, Indonesian culture is really needed for all of us which has became a part of digital era. Why ? Because as I have said before, digital era is a kind of the tool which is used to spread west culture in all over the world. But we can’t deny that west are really different with our culture, east person.

We need a sieve to filter when we need good coconut milk, right ? So it is same. Digital era is really good. Because 21th century is modern era. But we can’t absorbed all of them into our life. We need a sieve to filter if we want to be a good modern person. And the sieve is Indonesian Culture. So let’s back to our own culture.  Wassalamualaikum wr.wb.
